Over 70 local leaders-elect from across Utah gathered for the Utah League of Cities and Towns (ULCT) Elected Officials Essentials Newly Elected Crash Course training in North Salt Lake on Saturday December 9th. Over 130 more will meet online to receive this training on December 16th.
This crash course provides an invaluable opportunity for newly elected community leaders to interface with their more seasoned counterparts and delve into the fundamental aspects of municipal government.
“I am grateful that this upcoming class of local officials were willing to spend a Saturday sharpening their skills with us,” said Utah League of Cities and Towns Executive Director Cameron Diehl. “I hope they will utilize the skills they learned as they make policy decisions that will impact the quality of life for today’s and tomorrow’s residents.”
Expert presenters led discussions on ethics, open and public meetings, various forms of government, budgeting, land use, and other issues that directly impact communities. The comprehensive curriculum aimed to equip elected officials with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of Utah’s cities and towns both at the local level and the state level.
“The enduring power of the Utah League of Cities and Towns lies in our collective advocacy for our citizens,” expressed Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi, currently serving as the 2023–2024 ULCT Board President. “In this pivotal year, we are committed to amplifying our voice with our theme, ‘Speak Up!’ Actions resonate louder than words, and we are responsible for advocating with a resounding voice that is heard and understood.”
The Utah League of Cities and Towns is the unified voice for municipalities at the Utah State Capitol and advocates on policy issues such as land use, transportation, taxes, water, and public safety. The organization urges stakeholders to respect the roles of municipalities and the uniqueness of Utah communities.
The Board of Directors has worked collaboratively with Governor Spencer Cox, legislative leaders, business and civic leaders to plan for the challenges and opportunities that Utah’s population growth presents. The Utah League of Cities and Towns provides training and resources to Utah’s 255 municipalities and 1,434 mayors and council members.
