Capitol to transform into classroom for Local Officials Day

Approximately 500 youth council members from cities across the state will gather at the Utah State Capitol and Salt Palace Event Center to learn about Utah’s political processes on January 17th.

Students will meet with their legislators and local officials, participate in mock committees, and hear an address from Governor Spencer Cox.

“This is not only for youth to learn how they can engage with Utah’s political processes, but it also serves as an opportunity for legislators to meet the people who their policymaking will have the greatest impact on,” said Utah League of Cities and Towns Executive Director Cameron Diehl. “This is especially the case as we collectively plan for the quality of life of today’s and tomorrow’s voters.”

This year, youth council members will discuss a hypothetical bill about federal preemption of local governments while simulating a committee meeting.

The Utah League of Cities and Towns serves incorporated municipalities in the State of Utah with a strong, unified voice at the state and federal levels and provides information, training and technical assistance on municipal issues in order to create a greater public awareness and understanding of municipal responsibilities, governance and administration.

Local Officials Day at the Legislature is a ULCT effort to bring city youth councils, municipal leaders, and state legislators together to open lines of communication and resolve issues affecting our communities. Local Officials Day at the Legislature has occurred annually since the 1990s.
