Wasatch Jr. High Principal sleeps on roof to raise money for Granite Education Foundation, ‘Souper Bowl of Caring’.

As part of the “Souper Bowl of Caring,” Wasatch Jr. High Principal Mary Basso will be sleeping on the school’s roof tonight (Tuesday, February 6) to raise money for the Granite Education Foundation. From 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Basso will be waving to students and collecting more money for the cause (Wasatch Jr High, 3750 S 3100 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84109).

Wasatch Jr High students held several events, including dumping buckets of water and throwing plates of whipped cream on student and staff volunteers, raising over $35,000 since January 29.

“We told kids that if they reached the $18,000 mark we would sleep on the roof, rain or snow or stars. We support the cause and want to recognize student contributions to reach our goal,”   Basso stated. “We believe in the Granite Education Foundation and the needs of families in our community. We do not ever want to hear of students having to put school lunch in their pockets for siblings at home.”

Basso said a highlight as an administrator has been watching her students set high standards and then overwhelmingly exceed their goal through student and teacher participation. Students have also been competing with Churchill Jr. High to see who can raise the most money before the February 9 deadline. As of February 6, the schools have raised nearly $70,000.

“It unites us as one community for a good cause,” Basso stated.
