Ogden Salvation Army breaks ground on senior living residence

The Salvation Army Ogden Corps has broken ground on a new Silvercrest Senior Residence to provide low-income, subsidized housing for seniors 62 years and older.

The project, located at 2655 Grant Avenue in Ogden, will consist of 52 one-bedroom apartments, each with a kitchen, bath, and comfortable living quarters to encourage independent living. The senior residence fills a critical need for housing for low-income seniors. Residents pay only 30 percent of their income for housing, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) pays the difference.

The project has been designed by a local Ogden architectural firm to meet the needs of elderly residents and provide extensive, flexible space for resident enjoyment and supportive services, configured for healthy living and to conform to safe environmental standards for an aging population.

Various amenity spaces have been incorporated into the design to accommodate such on-site activities as case management/service coordination, social gatherings, recreational activities, and educational workshops. These spaces include two private offices (property manager and service coordinator), seven open lounge areas, a large community room, a library, a wellness room, an exercise room, a private gathering room, a laundry room, a garden area with raised planter boxes for tenants, and an outdoor patio.

The project also includes an on-site surface parking lot with 43 stalls. The site location is ideal for senior housing. The neighborhood is predominantly residential, but convenient to downtown Ogden. The site is located next to Salvation Army Ogden Corps, which allows for a strong sense of community.

“Many are surprised that the Salvation Army would be in the apartment housing business,” said Salvation Army Officer Jacob Bratton.  “However, the Silvercrest concept is to provide more than just housing—the concept is to provide a “home” for the residents where they can have access to social services and ministries to the whole person while living in a safe, comfortable, and peaceful environment.”
