Mayor Wilson praises Salt Lake County’s fiscal strength and new programs

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson will address the county council on Tuesday, June 4th, at 10:45 am, to discuss annual budget adjustments. The request follows budget and cost-cutting efforts last fall. Now, Mayor Wilson is proud to announce that, thanks to good management, structural balance has been achieved. It’s time to restore service levels. Mayor Wilson, acknowledging the benefits of prudent financial decisions, will encourage the council to release previously restricted funds to restore essential services to their former levels.

“We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our county employees for their resilience and dedication during these tough times,” said Mayor Wilson. “They have effectively done more with less, ensuring minimal disruption to the services our community relies on.”

The budget cuts made last fall were due to significant financial pressures, including a dramatic spike in county health care costs, inflation, and lower-than-expected tax revenue.

Despite these challenges, the Mayor, with the unanimous support of the county council on the 2024 budget, has successfully maintained a balanced budget through strategic spending cuts and efficient resource management. These efforts have been crucial in ensuring the continuation of vital county services while ensuring financial security. Among the measures taken were a hiring freeze and various expenditure reductions, all aimed at preventing a budget deficit.

Despite the cuts, the county still managed key achievements, including the successful rollout of the My County Rec Pass program, providing free access to rec centers for children aged 5-18, and the elimination of library late fees for children. More than 26,000 children have already been registered for the free My County Rec Pass, which started June 1.

However, the budget constraints have also led to staffing issues in areas such as libraries, parks, rec centers, flood management, and animal services.

The Mayor will emphasize the need to combat the rising use of fentanyl in the community, indicating a shift in priorities to address this critical issue. Despite the challenges, the county is now able to ease restrictions and restore service levels, particularly focusing on major investments in the southwest quadrant, including parks and trailways.

Looking ahead, the Mayor assured continued efforts to address the homelessness crisis, protect public safety, and revitalize downtown. The focus will also remain on bringing more affordable housing projects online, ensuring the community’s well-being and quality of life.
