Utah Senate Democrats applaud Supreme Court decision

The Utah Senate Democratic Caucus releases the following statement in regard to the Utah Supreme Court Decision in “LWVU v. Legislature”, published today:

“Today, the Supreme Court of Utah issued a landmark decision in “League of Women Voters of Utah v. Legislature”, affirming the constitutional protections of citizen-led initiatives. The court’s ruling underscores the fundamental principle that the power to alter or reform our government is inherent in the people of Utah and must be safeguarded against undue legislative interference.

This decision highlights that when Utahns exercise their right to reform the government through ballot initiatives, such actions are protected by our constitution. The court’s opinion clearly limits the Legislature’s ability to repeal and replace initiatives that embody the will of the people, ensuring that government reforms enacted through citizen initiatives cannot be undone without a compelling justification.

The Senate Democrats applaud the court’s recognition of these constitutional protections, including the right to fair and impartial redistricting processes. We stand firmly with the authority of Utah’s voters and their right to shape a transparent and just government that truly represents the voices of all Utahns.”
