Today the anti-labor and anti-education Republicans in the Utah Senate voted to pass HB 267 Public Sector Labor Amendments. HB 267 passed despite several Senators testifying that they received thousands of phone calls from their constituents in opposition and despite bi-partisan opposition to the bill from other Senators. Sen. Cullimore, the bill’s sponsor, said the purpose was to save taxpayer money and support our public agencies. Sen. Cullimore, when asked, could not name a single public agency, city, county, or school district in support of the bill, or how much money, if any, the bill would save Utah taxpayers.
In response, Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez had this to say, “This union-busting bill is yet another example of extremist Utah Republicans being out of step with working-class Utahns. Thank you to the hundreds of union members and supporters who showed up to have their voices heard in committee meetings. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our union brothers and sisters in opposing this bill that will harm families and lower wages.”
Governor Cox, today we join the tens of thousands of Utahns who support our public employees and call on you to immediately veto HB 267. You have claimed many times that you support Utah’s teachers, first responders, law enforcement, cities, counties, and families. Now is your chance to show that support with more than just words.
