Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation joins public-private effort to support Sandy Community & Recreation Center renovations

The Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation is proud to support the construction of the new Sandy Community & Recreation Center—a Sandy City recreation facility—joining Sandy City and Salt Lake County in making this project a reality.

The project will reimagine and rebuild a modern facility on the site of the current Alta Canyon Sports Center at 9565 Highland Drive in Sandy, which has served as a cornerstone of the community since 1984. The new state-of-the-art recreation center is expected to serve more than 59,000 residents and will offer a welcoming space for individuals and families of all ages. It will continue to provide expanded access to health, wellness, and community programs that enrich lives and strengthen the region.

“This center has always been about more than fitness—it’s a place where neighbors connect, families gather, and community happens,” said Lois Stillion, Alta Canyon Sports Center facility director. “We’re excited to build a space that reflects the needs and voices of the people we serve and continues to bring our community together in meaningful ways.”

The new center is a collaborative public-private partnership that reflects the shared vision of local government, philanthropic leaders, and community stakeholders to invest in quality-of-life infrastructure that promotes active living and community connection.

This effort reflects the Miller Family Foundation’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Utah communities by supporting projects that promote healthy living, foster connection, and create environments where individuals and families can thrive.

“The Miller family and Larry H. Miller Company have deep roots in this area, and this gift reflects our ongoing commitment to enrich lives and strengthen neighborhoods in the places where we live, work, and play,” said Steve Miller, chairman of the Larry H. Miller Company and trustee of the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation. “We’re honored to be part of a project that will benefit community residents now and for generations to come—and we’re deeply grateful to all the partners and stakeholders who have helped bring this vision to life.”

Plans for the new center will preserve the beloved outdoor pool space while creating a modern, efficient facility designed to meet the needs of residents today and for years to come. The current Alta Canyons Sports Center will close for construction on August 16 and is expected to reopen in early 2027.
