Better Boundaries announced today a targeted signature removal campaign in response to widespread reports of voters being misled by signature gatherers working to repeal Utah’s anti-gerrymandering law, Proposition 4.
The initiative follows recent investigative reports by KSL, including “‘I felt tricked’: KSL investigates some misleading claims from those working to repeal Prop 4” and The Salt Lake Tribune “Some voters say they were tricked into signing petitions to repeal Utah’s anti-gerrymandering law”. The organization has also received numerous direct reports from Utah residents via email and social media expressing concern that they were not fully informed about the petitions they signed.
“We at Better Boundaries believe voters deserve transparency and honesty in the democratic process,” said Elizabeth Rasmussen, Executive Director of Better Boundaries. “When Utahns passed Proposition 4 in 2018, they were clear about what they wanted. Utahns should know exactly what they’re signing, and if a repeal effort can’t win on the facts, it shouldn’t try to win through misleading petition practices.”
The removal campaign has sent thousands of mail pieces to voters who signed the repeal petition, providing them with accurate information about what they signed and instructions on how to remove their signatures if they choose to do so.
Evidence of the campaign’s impact is already visible, with voters publicly acknowledging their concerns. One voter posted on social media: “Thank God these people exist. I started questioning what I signed after I heard about it on the radio.”
Better Boundaries remains committed to protecting Utah’s voter-approved anti-gerrymandering measures and ensuring that all citizens have access to accurate information about ballot initiatives that affect their democratic representation.
