Salt Lake County shared its first Green Vision Sustainability Assessment, evaluating environmental impacts of County operations to improve service efficiency. This assessment establishes a baseline that will guide Salt Lake County’s progress on lessening its impact on the environmental footprint.
This milestone report examines operational impacts across water, emissions, and energy, establishing a baseline for the County’s forthcoming Sustainability Action Plan focused on government operations.
The Assessment compiles foundational data and highlights existing initiatives across five core elements: air, water, energy, land, and waste and recycling.
“Salt Lake County government has a responsibility to reduce its energy, water, and waste use and to create efficiencies throughout its operations. To know where we can improve, we need to gauge our current use and set reduction goals for the future. Additionally, it’s important for us to set an example for the general public. As a regional government, our operations play a vital role in protecting our environment and supporting the long-term well-being of our community.”
—Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson
Looking ahead, Salt Lake County’s Sustainability Division will focus on strengthening data collection and management systems. By consolidating large datasets into transparent and accessible tools, County leaders will be better equipped to make informed, data-driven decisions. For example, early analysis found that calculating water use since 2022 required more than 12,000 individual data entries, underscoring the need for streamlined systems to support long-term tracking and efficiency.
Through the Office of Regional Development, the County will continue building cross-county collaboration, working with teams across Fleet Management, Facilities Management, Parks & Recreation, Landfill, Flood Control & Watershed, Information Technology, and others to identify efficiencies and improve coordination.
The Green Vision Sustainability Assessment represents both a starting point and a commitment: to better understand current impacts, to improve efficiency across County operations, and to build a healthier, more sustainable future for all residents.
