Local public power advocate receives national recognition

On June 30, Mike Squires, managing director of government affairs at Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), received the Harold Kramer-John Preston Personal Service Award during the American Public Power Association’s National Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The award recognizes individuals for their service to the American Public Power Association (APPA).

APPA is the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 towns and cities nationwide, representing public power before the federal government to protect the interests of the more than 49 million people that public power utilities serve, and the 96,000 people they employ. APPA advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and operations.

Squires serves on the APPA Board of Directors and chairs the Advisory Committee and Legislative & Resolutions Committee. A highly effective advocate, Squires demonstrates a strong commitment to strengthening the association’s national voice, leading coordinated efforts such as the APPA Legislative Rally and regional outreach to ensure all utilities are represented.

Since starting with UAMPS in 2018, Squires has overseen state and federal affairs for the joint action agency. He has significantly influenced energy policy within Utah as well as at the federal level to protect public power customers.

UAMPS CEO and General Manager Mason Baker said, “Mike’s unwavering commitment to UAMPS’ mission of providing affordable and reliable power for Utah’s member communities has been invaluable to members, fellow staff, and the broader public power industry.”
