The Orrin G. Hatch Foundation honored U.S. Senator John Barrasso, M.D. (R-Wyoming), Senate Majority Whip, with its 2026 Titan of Public Service Award Thursday evening at the Foundation’s annual gala at the Grand America Hotel.
The Titan of Public Service Award honors leaders who exemplify the principles that defined Senator Orrin G. Hatch’s many years of public service in the United States Senate: effective governance, civic leadership, and an unwavering commitment to serving the American people.
Senator Barrasso joins a distinguished group of past recipients, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, and Senator Tom Cotton.
“Senator Barrasso has devoted his life to serving others—first as a physician and now as one of our nation’s most respected public servants,” said Matt Sandgren, Executive Director of the Hatch Foundation. “Whether caring for patients in Wyoming or representing his state in the U.S. Senate, Senator Barrasso has consistently approached his work with humility and a genuine desire to make a difference in others’ lives. We are proud to honor his remarkable life of service with this year’s Titan of Public Service Award.”
Before entering public office, Senator Barrasso spent 24 years as an orthopedic surgeon in Wyoming, where he served as president of the Wyoming Medical Society and was named Wyoming Physician of the Year. Widely known as “Wyoming’s Doctor,” Senator Barrasso brought that same commitment to service into public office.
After serving in the Wyoming State Senate, Senator Barrasso was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2007 and has since been elected four times. In 2025, he began serving as Senate Majority Whip, the second-ranking position in Senate Republican leadership.
Throughout his Senate service, Senator Barrasso has been a leading voice on energy, public lands, health care, national security, and economic policy.
He currently serves on the Senate Committees on Energy and Natural Resources, Finance, and Foreign Relations.

The evening’s program featured a fireside conversation between Senator Barrasso and former U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith. The discussion explored Senator Barrasso’s journey from medicine to public service, his experiences representing Wyoming in the Senate, and his perspective on the nation’s challenges and opportunities.
