Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Russian studies program hosted Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Russian opposition leader, historian, and author, as part of National Security Studies Week. The event brought students and faculty together for a substantive conversation on Russian political history, the mechanics of authoritarian governance, and the conditions necessary for democratic reform, offering the kind of firsthand geopolitical perspective that defines the Russian studies program’s evolving mission.
“Opportunities like this one are extraordinarily rare. For our students to have direct access to one of the most consequential voices in Russian politics today is something UVU does not take lightly; guest speakers like Kara-Murza demonstrate our commitment to providing students opportunities to connect with the people most shaping their field of study,” said Fred White, Ph.D., professor of Russian and integrated studies at UVU and National Security Studies Fellow.
The event reflects a deliberate shift in UVU’s Russian studies program since 2022, as the program has repositioned its curriculum to prepare students for careers in diplomacy, federal government service, and national security. The program now emphasizes direct workforce readiness outcomes, connecting students with the real-world figures, policy debates, and historical arguments they will encounter in those fields.
Kara-Murza spoke at length about the lessons of Russia’s democratic opening in the early 1990s, arguing that the failure to pursue transitional justice after the collapse of the Soviet Union set the conditions for authoritarianism’s return. He also addressed the current political moment in Russia, arguing that meaningful opposition to the government exists within the country, that it is broader and more organized than official narratives suggest, and that political change, when it comes, will arrive suddenly and without warning.
Established in January 2016, UVU’s Center for National Security Studies (CNSS) is one of the premier national security programs in the country. The CNSS employs a multidisciplinary academic approach to examine both the theoretical and practical aspects of national security policy and practice, with areas of focus in intelligence, emerging technology, cybersecurity, and homeland security.
