Hatch Foundation to honor Sen. John Thune (R-SD) with “Titan of Public Service” award

Today, the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation announced that it will recognize Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-SD) with the “Titan of Public Service” award during a special gala event at Salt Lake City’s Grand America on August 14th.

The award, inspired by the Foundation’s namesake, Senator Orrin G. Hatch, is given to leaders who have shown extraordinary dedication to civic leadership throughout their careers.

Senator Thune has served with distinction in the U.S. Senate since 2004. As Senate Republican Whip, he is the second-most senior member of the Republican leadership team. Recently, he announced his candidacy to succeed Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as the Senate Republican leader. Senator McConnell received the “Titan of Public Service” award last year.

Upon the announcement, Senator Thune said:

“I had the privilege of serving with Senator Hatch for 14 years and in addition to being an outstanding legislator and a principled conservative, he was also a cherished and good-humored colleague and a deeply kind man,” said Senator Thune. “I am incredibly humbled to receive this award, and I will continue to honor Orrin’s memory and the principles he valued so highly.”

“Senator Thune is a standout example of dedication and service in the Senate,” said Matt Sandgren, Executive Director of the Hatch Foundation. “His commitment to common-sense solutions exemplifies the qualities of Senator Hatch’s storied public service. We are proud to recognize him with the ‘Titan of Public Service’ award.”

“Senator Thune’s service, particularly during the time we served together on the Senate Commerce Committee, was marked by his astute understanding of the issues and a dedication to those he was elected to serve,” noted former U.S. Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), a member of the Hatch Foundation Board. “His leadership capabilities were evident then and have only grown. It’s a privilege to honor him as he continues to exemplify the highest standards of public service.”

The award ceremony promises to unite current and former leaders to celebrate Senator Thune’s achievements, ongoing contributions, and dedication to the principles that Senator Hatch deeply valued.
