Wednesday morning, members of the Utah Senate and House Democratic Caucuses joined legislators from 38 other states in a press conference outside the Massachusetts State House to stand in solidarity with Texas Democrats who are taking courageous action to stop an extreme and undemocratic redistricting effort led by President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
“Here in Utah, the battle against partisan gerrymandering is all too familiar. We remain in court today, fighting for fair congressional boundaries. Across the country, the outcome has been the same: maps drawn to secure political advantage rather than to represent the voices and communities they are meant to serve.
“That’s why we stand with our colleagues in Texas, who are risking their safety and exhausting all of their options to push back against these unprecedented and undemocratic practices. Their fight is our fight, because what is happening in Texas could easily happen in Utah- and in any state where political power is prioritized over the will of the people. We believe in strong institutions, which are the foundation of a healthy democracy. Our caucuses remain committed to protecting the integrity of our institutions and ensuring fair representation for all Utahns.”
