Utahns Say Trump is More Trustworthy than Clinton

Donald TrumpUtahns say Republican nominee Donald Trump is more trustworthy than Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

A new UtahPolicy.com/Dan Jones & Associates survey finds 48% of Utahns say Trump is the more trustworthy of the two, while just 28% say they believe Hillary Clinton more than Trump. About a quarter (24%) are undecided.

It’s not a mystery why Clinton is seen as less trustworthy than Trump in Utah. Her shifting explanations about the use of a private email server while Secretary of State have been reported on ad nauseam since the scandal broke.

Just a few weeks ago Clinton claimed that FBI Director James Comey said her “answers were truthful,” and that her statements were consistent with what she has said publicly. That claim was rated as “pants on fire” by Politifact. It’s just one example of her using linguistic nuances to try and circumvent potentially sticky situations.

Clinton and her husband have been caught up in scandal after scandal since they stepped on the national stage in 1992 during his first run for president.

Trump, however, has a penchant for out and out falsehoods. His page on Politifact has so many “pants on fire” ratings you could roast marshmallows.

For his part, Trump:

  • Claimed President Obama is the “founder of ISIS” (he’s not).
  • Said he saw videotape “of the people taking the money off the plane” to pay ransom to Iran for the release of U.S. hostages (he didn’t).
  • Claimed Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party are trying to “rig” the debates so that they are opposite NFL telecasts (not true).
  • Claimed Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (he wasn’t).
  • Repeatedly has said Hillary Clinton wants to “abolish the 2nd Amendment” (she doesn’t).
  • Claimed he was one of the earliest critics of the Iraq war (he wasn’t).

Utah Republicans trust Trump more than Clinton, while Democrats say Clinton is more trustworthy than Trump. Independents are not sure who they trust more.

  • Republicans say Trump is more trustworthy than Clinton by a 75-6% margin.
  • Democrats pick Clinton as the more credible candidate 87-3%.
  • 35% of independent voters say Trump is more trustworthy, while 27% say Clinton. 38% are undecided.

Trump has a 12-point lead over Clinton in Utah according to the newest UtahPolicy.com survey.

The survey was conducted July 18 – August 4, 2016, among 858 likely Utah voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.34%.
