Utahns Confident in Direction State is Headed, Less Sure About National Direction

utah1Utahns feel better about the direction of Utah than the country overall.

A new UtahPolicy.com survey finds 2/3rds of Utahns think the state is on the right track, while only 37% think the nation overall is.

The survey was taken before Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President.

It’s surprising that nearly half (48%) of Utahns think the country is on the wrong track, given that Congress and the White House are unified under Republican control.

Just under 1/4 of Utahns (24%) think the state is on the wrong track.

Those numbers are sure to go up in the short term as the national economy seems to be getting a boost from the election of Donald Trump. The Dow crossed 20,000 for the first time on Wednesday of this week.

Utah Republicans overwhelmingly think the state is on the right track, while Democrats feel the opposite.

  • 84% of Utah Republicans say the state is on the right track, while just 10% say it’s on the wrong path.
  • 62% of Utah Democrats say the state is heading in the wrong direction. Just 28% say it’s going the right way.
  • 61% of political independents say Utah is on the right track, and 26% say it’s on the wrong trail.

Nationally, Republicans are more optimistic about the direction of the country than Democrats and independents, but not by much.

  • Republicans say the country is on the right track by just an 8-point margin, 47-39%.
  • Democrats are not happy with the direction of the country with 71% saying it’s headed the wrong way.
  • 52% of Independent voters say the country is headed in the wrong direction, while just 28% say it’s going the right direction.

The Dan Jones & Associates poll was conducted December 8 – 12, 2016 among 614 Utah voters, with a margin of error +/-3.95%.
