UTGOP State Central Committee votes to continue federal appeal of S.B. 54

UTGOP LogoIn a special meeting, the Utah Republican Party State Central Committee voted to continue its federal appeal of Utah State Senate Bill 54.

At the February 4, 2017 meeting, the committee voted to end the legal challenge and in the interim found there was a pathway to finish the final stages of the federal appeal without any additional cost to the Party.

As a result, members of the SCC requested a special meeting to discuss the details and determine a course of action. Prior to the vote, Chairman James Evans requested three conditions be placed on a vote to continue the lawsuit:

  1. There cannot be additional costs incurred to the Utah Republican Party in pursuit of this final stage of the appeal of S.B. 54.

  2. That we communicate clearly that the desire to complete the final stage of the federal appeal is for the purpose of receiving an answer from the 10th Circuit and not meant to be adversarial.

  3. The Utah Republican Party reaffirms their support and appreciation of Governor Gary Herbert and the Utah State Legislature for their efforts to preserve caucus/convention system.
