Lee pushes back against Democrats who say Trump should cancel his meeting with Putin

Sen. Mike Lee says Democrats who are calling for President Trump to cancel his Monday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin are wrong.

“They’re not the President of the United States,” Lee told Fox News. “This is a meeting that’s been carefully set up, carefully planned out. It could be productive. I don’t see any good reason to cancel it.”

However, Lee said President Trump should discuss Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election with Putin.

“I think it becomes increasingly difficult for the Russians to deny it,” says Lee. “We’ve known for years that the Russians try to meddle in U.S. elections. I don’t think he (Putin) can credibly continue to deny his knowledge of it. I think Vladimir Putin has to start admitting it.”

When asked if he thought special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the election was a “witch hunt” as it has been characterized by President Trump.

“I don’t call it a ‘witch hunt.’ I call it an investigation. But, I also call it an investigation that I’d like to see wrap up in the near future. He’s had well over a year. I’d like to see him complete whatever report he’s going to submit and move on with things,” said Lee.

Lee also discussed the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation process for President Trump’s nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
