Sen. Luz Escamilla, D-Salt Lake City, announced on Wednesday she is jumping into the Salt Lake City Mayoral contest following current Mayor Jackie Biskupski’s startling announcement on Monday that she would not seek another term.
Escamilla made her announcement on social media.
“Since learning a few days ago of May Biskupski’s decision to withdraw from the 2019 mayor’s race, I have fielded many questions about my future and whether I would consider a run for Mayor of Salt Lake City,” she wrote. “After an abbreviated process and enthusiastic expressions of support, I have decided today that I will be a candidate for Mayor in 2019.”
Escamilla said she would be announcing her campaign kickoff shortly.
