Sen. Mike Lee says special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election “went off the rails.”
Lee was responding to White House adviser Jared Kushner’s statement Tuesday that the Mueller investigation was “more harmful” to the U.S. than Russian disinformation campaigns during the 2016 election. Kushner also downplayed Russian involvement as “a few Facebook ads.”
Lee told Fox News host Judge Andrew Napolitano he understood Kushner’s argument.
“I can’t imagine Jared meant to say that, but I get his point,” said Lee. “This investigation went way off the rails, and the investigation itself did some harm. I think there were aspects of the report that were weird.”
Lee also said former President Obama needs to explain why he didn’t do more to stop Russian intervention in the 2016 election.
“We know the Obama administration knew there was some bad stuff going on. Why they didn’t stop it, I don’t know. He needs to tell us why he didn’t.”
