Video: The Business Community Speaks Out on Immigration Reform

When Congress returns from August break, the debate over the future of comprehensive immigration reform will be back in the spotlight.

The business community stands in strong support of comprehensive immigration reform. Securing the world’s top talent will drive innovation and job creation for decades to come and help keep America as the economic leader in the world.

Salt Lake Chamber President and CEO Lane Beattie, who is a member of the U.S. Chamber Board of Directors, joins fellow business leaders from around the country in a new video released by the U.S. Chamber.

“I don’t think it has ever been more important than it is right now to have comprehensive immigration reform,” he says.

The issue has become more important during a slow national economic recovery. With national unemployment still at 7.4 percent, many businesses have jobs they can’t fill because they can’t find qualified workers.

“They get a doctorate, Ph.Ds, training as engineers and then we say, ‘oh by the way, now that you have that and we’ve trained you… you can’t stay,’” Beattie says. “That’s absolutely ludicrous.”

Immigration reform should allow foreign students to stay in America and contribute to our economy.
