Fourth District Republican challenger Dan Hemmert is the first Utahn named to the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program, meaning he is one of the candidates they believe has the best chance of defeating freshman Democrat Ben McAdams in 2020.

The program, which provides mentorship and fundraising support for candidates who meet certain goals, has been in place since the 2011 election cycle. Former Rep. Mia Love was named to the program during the 2014 cycle.

Hemmert was named to the lowest tier of the program, called “On the Radar.”

NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer said in an email press release, “We’re excited to announce another round of impressive candidates for the 2020 cycle. We look forward to helping these candidates succeed.”

Hemmert is one of five Republicans vying for the GOP nomination to take on McAdams in 2020 along with Kathleen Anderson, Kim Coleman, Jay McFarland and John Molnar.
