Lawmakers will begin online-only special session Thursday morning

Utah Capitol 31

The Utah Legislature will gavel their first-ever online special session to order at 9:00 am on Thursday morning.

The special session will be unique in a couple of ways. It will be the first with lawmakers attending remotely. That’s a necessity because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It will also be the first time that lawmakers call themselves into a special session, power voters gave to them in 2018 when they approved a constitutional amendment allowing lawmakers to convene a special session in an emergency.

The House and Senate will take turns holding their online meetings, with the House going first on Thursday.

Legislative sources tell UtahPolicy.com there will more than 20 bills up for consideration by legislators when they start on Thursday. Lawmakers have been told there’s a 50/50 chance that the session will extend into Friday.
