Huntsman grabs narrow lead over Cox in new poll

Jon Huntsman 02

Former Gov. Jon Huntsman has pulled ahead of current Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox by the narrowest of margins according to a new poll of likely Republican primary voters.

The survey conducted by Dan Jones & Associates for the Salt Lake Chamber found:

  • Jon Huntsman – 35 percent
  • Spencer Cox – 33 percent
  • Former Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes – 10 percent
  • Former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright – 5 percent
  • Undecided – 17 percent

The survey was conducted among 555 likely Republican primary voters from June 1-10.

Huntsman and Cox’s support is within the margin of error, meaning the race is essentially tied with approximately two weeks to go before the election.

The sample includes Republican voters and others who are likely to register as Republicans in order to vote in the June 30th primary. The election is “closed,” meaning only registered Republicans can cast a ballot.

Among all voters, Huntsman leads Cox by 4 points, 35-31 percent.

The winner of the June primary will be a heavy favorite to win the election in November as Utah has not elected a Democrat as governor in four decades.
