1857 – 120 Missouri emigrants are murdered in the Mountain Meadows Massacre in southern Utah by Mormon guerillas.

1971 – Donny Osmond has the #1 hit on the U.S. pop charts with “Go Away Little Girl.”

1971 – Former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev dies. He was one of the most colorful and significant figures of the Cold War.

2001 – America is attacked. Two hijacked airplanes crash into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City. Another plane crashes into the Pentagon and a fourth plane crash lands in Pennsylvania when passengers attack the hijackers. When the day is over, nearly 3,000 people are dead and America is changed forever.
