1789 – The first Congress of the United States approves 12 amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, to the U.S. Constitution and sends them to the states for ratification.

1957 – The Little Rock Nine, under the protection of the Arkansas National Guard and 1,000 Army paratroopers sent by Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower, begin their first full day of classes at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

1959 – Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower meet for talks, agreeing on a number of issues.

1965 – 59-year-old Satchel Paige pitches three innings for the Kansas City Athletics, giving up only one hit. The ageless wonder was a Negro League baseball legend.
