822 – Joseph Marion Hernandez, from Florida, becomes the first Hispanic and the first non-white person to serve in Congress or at any of the highest levels of the three branches of government.

1927 – Babe Ruth hits his 60th home run of the 1927 season and sets a home run record that would stand for 34 years.

1954 – The USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, is commissioned by the U.S. Navy. It was constructed under the direction of Navy Captain Hyman G. Rickover.

1955 – James Dean, a 24-year-old actor on his way to stardom, is killed in Cholame, CA, when his Porsche hits another car at an intersection.
