1883 – California bandit Black Bart makes his last stagecoach robbery. He makes a quick getaway, but drops an incriminating clue that eventually sends him to prison.
1957 – The Soviet Union launches the first animal into space – a part-Siberian husky named Laika – aboard Sputnik 2 spacecraft. She died in space after batteries of her life-support system ran down.
1962 – The Crystals earn a No. 1 hit with “He’s a Rebel.”
2014 – One World Trade Center officially open in Manhattan, replacing the Twin Towers that were destroyed in terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
