Same-Sex Marriage Now Legal for a Majority of Americans

With Monday's decision by the Supreme Court to not hear a series of appeals on same-sex marriage cases means marriage equality is now legal for a majority of the U.S. population.

FiveThirtyEight.com says the 24 states and District of Columbia, where same-sex marriage is now legal, have a combined population of 165 million. The 26 states where same-sex marriage is still prohibited roughly have a combined population of 151 million.

Monday's decision could lead to legalizing same-sex marriage in 6 other states, adding another 25 million people for to the total.

The speed at which marriage equality is becoming the law of the land is astonishing. Just two years ago, only 6 states and the District of Columbia allowed same-sex marriage.
