Non-Discrimination Legislation Carves Out Exception for Boy Scouts

How important is the Boy Scout program to leaders of the LDS Church?

The new gay and lesbian anti-discrimination bill to be released later Wednesday is a specific exemption under the definition of an “employer” for the Boy Scouts.

That means the Boy Scouts could discriminate against gays and lesbians in its own employment — and could continue to refuse to allow gay scout leaders.

Male members of the LDS Church often serve in scouting. And the current LDS President, Thomas S. Monson, has received the highest scout honor, being named as a Silver Beaver.
