Westminster Holds Inauguration for 18th President Stephen R. Morgan

Westminster College will formally install Stephen R. Morgan as its 18th president at inauguration on Sept. 26, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the Richer Commons.

Inauguration is a distinguished ceremony steeped in the traditions of higher education. The event honors Westminster’s deeply-rooted history and celebrates a milestone for the college. Inauguration events will include:

  • Academic procession of faculty, trustees, senior administrators and college guests
  • Remarks by Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker
  • Remarks by faculty, alumni and student representatives
  • Investiture: presentation of President’s Medal of Office and Presidential Hood
  • Inaugural address by President Morgan
  • Brunch and campus showcase following the ceremony

President Morgan became Westminster College’s 18th president in July 2015. He has devoted more than three decades of service to Westminster in a variety of administrative roles, including vice president for institutional advancement and executive vice president and treasurer. Morgan’s versatile leadership style has made him a key asset to the college’s executive team—he has advised six past presidents on almost every major campus decision since 1981. He has been instrumental in shaping Westminster into the institution it is today, leading the college’s master plan, as well as the 2004–14 and 2014–19 strategic plans. During his tenure, he led the growth of the college’s endowment to more than $70 million, and directed 17 campus construction and renovation projects. Westminster contributes $180 million a year to the local economy.

“Westminster has a proud legacy and I’ve witnessed the power of education to change lives and communities,” said President Morgan. “I’m in a unique role—having watched so much campus development over the past 34 years—to connect the past to the future. I’m honored to be installed as the college’s 18th president and to carry out the strategic vision developed by our campus.”

Morgan earned a BA in accounting from the University of Utah and is a certified public accountant (CPA). An avid runner, he has completed 26 marathons and is a member of the St. George Marathon “20-year club,” after running the race for 20 consecutive years. His greatest joy in life is his family: wife, Sandy, and children Amanda, Danny and Alex—all of whom are Westminster alumni—as well as his seven grandchildren.
