Salt Lake Community Action Diversion Program Making Immediate Impact

The new Diversion Program run by Salt Lake Community Action in partnership with The Road Home and United Way 211 is showing great promise in the effort to end homelessness.

Diversion is a strategy that prevents homelessness for families seeking shelter by helping them identify immediate, alternate housing arrangements and, if necessary, connecting them with services and financial assistance to help them return to permanent housing. The new program, which began in November, provides case management and short term financial assistance for families identified as eligible for diversion.

Salt Lake Community Action’s Diversion Specialists meet with families at the shelter entrance for consultation and assessment of safety and appropriateness of diversion. Once it is determined that a family is eligible for diversion, the Diversion Specialist helps families develop a housing stabilization plan.

The positive impact of the Diversion Program has been immediate. 24 of 62 families that have received diversion consultation services were able to find safe alternatives to the shelter. This success reduces the number of families becoming homeless, the demand for shelter beds, and the size of program wait lists.
