Utahns exchange 1,500 High-emitting gas cans for environmentally-friendly cans to improve our air

The latest Show UCAIR clean air program removed 1,500 high-emitting gas cans from our state as Utahns exchanged old gas cans for environmentally-safe gas cans. The exchange was made possible by Boeing, Union Pacific, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR).

Utahns exchanged their leaky standard cans for EPA-compliant SureCan gas cans at the Show UCAIR Gas Can Exchange program on Saturday, June 12. In just hours, 1,500 old gas cans were exchanged to help improve our air quality.

Due to the success and continued interest from Utahns, another gas can exchange is being planned to take place fall 2021.

“Boeing is working to achieve several ambitious environmental goals within our company by 2025, which includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25%,” said Joel Raup, Boeing Salt Lake City Site General Manager. “Working with the Utah Clean Air Partnership to eliminate 2,800 high-emitting gas cans from the environment is a tremendous step forward toward a cleaner environment and helping to solve the fundamental global challenge of climate change.”

Old gas cans constantly leak volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pollute our air. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates one non EPA-compliant gas can may emit up to 8 pounds of VOCs each year through spills and evaporation over the five-year life span of the gas can, while new EPA approved models reduce daily emissions by 75 percent.

The environmentally-friendly, EPA-compliant SureCan gas cans limit VOCs and provide better performance with:
●      Flexible rotating nozzle and thumb trigger with automatic closure to reduce spilling and escaping fumes during fuel dispensing.
●      Thicker, durable construction to decrease vapor permeation through container walls.
●      Childproof cap for safety.

“With this year’s exchange, we were able to remove thousands of pounds of VOCs per year from our air; that’s a tremendous positive impact on our air,” said Kim Frost, UCAIR executive director. “UCAIR greatly appreciates Boeing, Union Pacific and Eccles Foundation’s funding of the purchase of SureCans for the exchange and the participation from those in our communities. As we all work together, we can continue to make great strides toward blue skies and better air.”
