Rep. Brian King, candidate for Governor of Utah, has released the following statement in response to Governor Cox signing S.B. 240 – Government Records Access and Management Act Amendments:
“Yesterday, Governor Cox made it far more difficult for Utahns to access information regarding the actions of their public officials. With this law, S.B. 240, now in effect, official calendars of public officials are exempted from public records laws. This is not a complicated issue: public officials serve the public, meaning their business is your business. Utahns deserve to know how elected officials spend their time while being paid with taxpayer money.
“It’s also not happenstance that this bill was signed into law days before the trial to determine whether Attorney General Sean Reyes’ calendar should be made public. Elected officials, including the Attorney General, our legislators, and the Governor, should not be afraid to share their calendars with the public. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and Governor Cox just signed a bill that closed the blinds so the Utahns can’t see inside.
“For me, public service is about delivering results, not rhetoric. To that end, I have decided to release my 2024 legislative calendar. This is another stark example of the choice Utahns have in this election. They can vote for someone who intentionally keeps them in the dark, or they can join me for the better.”
