Minority Leader Luz Escamilla, also released the following statement regarding the passing of former Sen. Karen Mayne:

“The passing of Senator Karen Mayne is a profound loss for me personally and for everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. Sen. Mayne was not just an extraordinarily effective legislator; she was a master negotiator who knew how to find common ground without compromising her principles. Her ability to balance the art of compromise with a steadfast commitment to her values made her a truly unique and powerful force in the Utah State Legislature.

“What made Sen. Mayne so powerful and effective was her acute understanding of people. Sen. Mayne had an extraordinary gift for meeting people where they were, offering guidance, support, or simply a listening ear. I will always cherish the moments when she called me ‘kiddo,’ a term of endearment that exemplified the warmth and kindness she brought to our relationship. We entered the legislature together, coming from very different backgrounds and life experiences, yet she always made me feel valued and supported. Sen. Mayne truly cared about people—not just as constituents or colleagues, but as individuals with their own stories, struggles, and triumphs. When I spoke with her, I felt seen and heard, knowing she genuinely cared about what I was saying and feeling. She had a remarkable ability to make every person feel special.

“Her ability to connect on such a personal level made her not only a mentor to me but a mentor to so many others. She had a remarkable ability to blend strength with compassion, effectiveness with empathy. The void she leaves behind is immeasurable, but so is the legacy she has created. Utah has lost one of its most dedicated public servants, and I have lost a dear friend and mentor. Sen. Mayne’s memory will continue to inspire me, and I will strive to honor her legacy by embodying the same kindness, wisdom, and dedication that she brought to her work every day. Rest in peace, Karen—you will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Forever your “kiddo”, Luz Escamilla.”
