Kent Davis, attorney, former Salt Lake County prosecutor, Army veteran, and Republican, announced today his intention to seek the position of Salt Lake County District Attorney.
Announcing his run, Kent highlighted the urgent need for a new leader for the chief law enforcement entity in Utah’s most populous county, one who will focus on building back trust, transparency, and accountability for the people of Salt Lake County.
“It is with a great deal of humility that I announce my candidacy for Salt Lake County District Attorney,” said Kent Davis. “I take this step after hearing from many local residents who are concerned about the current direction of leadership and decision-making at the D.A.’s office. Public trust in our legal processes and law enforcement is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy and my background provides a unique and strong foundation for taking the helm of this most critical office.”
Kent previously served as Deputy District Attorney for Salt Lake County, working under current D.A., Sim Gill, from 2017-2021. In this role, he primarily oversaw the prosecution of violent felonies and those involving the sexual exploitation of women and children. He witnessed firsthand the importance of transparent and principled decision-making that prioritizes both responsiveness to victims and respect for the rights of the accused.
“Law enforcement leadership must ensure that trust and fairness define every action for every person that is brought into the criminal justice system, victim or accused,” said Davis. “Justice must be applied consistently and transparently for all.”
While at the District Attorney’s Office, Kent also created and supervised a cybercrime prosecution team. Kent brings a sophisticated understanding of digital tools, including their application to criminal forensics, to help hunt down and prosecute online criminals who prey on our most vulnerable residents.
“As District Attorney, I will prioritize the modernization of our county’s approach to legal enforcement to keep pace with constantly evolving technology and maximize the efficient use of public resources,” said Davis.
