Guest opinion: Embracing collaboration for Utah’s bright future

Utah has always stood as a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals work together towards common goals. From the pioneers who braved hardships to build resilient communities to the trailblazers who joined forces to drive economic progress, our state’s history makes one thing clear: We understand the power of working hand in hand. Thanks to our dedicated community leaders and committed lawmakers, this tradition extends into our public policy work each year. Yet, despite the robust state of Utah’s economy, we recognize that we are not separate from our national economy. In the spirit of Utah’s collaborative ethos, the Salt Lake Chamber’s 2023 Federal Priorities highlight areas where cooperative effort can lead to collective prosperity nationwide.

When considering how brightly Utah’s economy shines in comparison to those of other states, it becomes clear why the voice of business is of paramount importance to our federal delegation. Our legislators are elected to voice the will of the people, but to do so, they must also serve as champions for our businesses. These enterprises are the backbone of our economy, the engines that drive job creation, technological advancement and community development. When our elected officials advocate for policies that empower businesses, they are ultimately advocating for the prosperity of individuals and families – the constituents they are duty-bound to represent.

For example, we know that responsible financial practices and market freedom are essential for sustained economic growth. What some don’t realize is that irresponsible financial practices, such as an overreliance on debt, have a direct impact on real people, whether it be by increasing inflation or discouraging direct spending. So, in our federal priorities, the Chamber emphasizes the need for policies that promote prudent risk management and corporate governance, minimizing the need for financial bailouts. We work together with Utah business owners to press for policies that promote responsible and sustainable behavior in the financial industry, including prudent risk management and corporate governance.

However, fiscal responsibility is not the only area that requires our collaborative focus during this upcoming session. Utah, like many other states, faces a critical shortage of skilled workers across various industries. To address this challenge, the Chamber advocates for immigration reform that increases pathways for legal immigration while addressing border security. Fixing the broken immigration system will address workforce demands, protect the national interest and allow communities and families to prosper.

Lastly, permitting reform serves as an opportunity to empower businesses by simplifying the process, reducing regulatory burdens and encouraging responsible decision-making at the state and local levels. By engaging businesses, industry experts and government officials in constructive dialogue, we can streamline regulatory processes, eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles and create a more business-friendly environment. This collaborative approach empowers entrepreneurs and fuels Utah’s economic engine.

The aforementioned priorities are just a taste of what the Chamber is sharing with our elected leaders in Washington. As we collaborate with lawmakers and Utah businesses to find solutions that strengthen our communities, we will call for the importance of grid resilience, cybersecurity in foreign relations, expanded flight service to our nation’s capital and more. In a landscape where our state stands as a model for economic success, the influence of our federal representatives becomes an avenue through which the principles that fuel our prosperity can be shared with the wider nation. The hope is that Utah’s federal delegation can bridge the gap between Washington, D.C., and our state, striving to make the nation’s capital a reflection of the values and policies that have contributed to Utah’s exceptional economic standing.

The Salt Lake Chamber’s federal policy priorities for 2023-2024 reflect a comprehensive approach to cultivating a strong and vibrant economy in Utah. By working together and promoting productive dialogue, the Chamber aims to fortify Utah’s economy while nurturing an environment where businesses can thrive and individuals can prosper. Together, we can demonstrate our unwavering commitment to civility, collaboration and the proud heritage that defines us as Utahns.
