Lee: Criminal justice reform will make Americans safer

Sen. Mike Lee says the proposed overhaul of the criminal justice system in Congress will make America’s justice system smarter and Americans safer.

Lee was a guest on Monday’s edition of “The Story with Martha MacCallum” on Fox News. He said he’s encouraged that President Donald Trump is supportive of the proposal.

“This is something that will make the American people safer. President Donald Trump has a strong track record of making the American people safe,” said Lee. “We have to make sure our federal incarceration system is working correctly.”

Lee explained the bill allows some criminals in the federal system to get out of prison early if they meet certain requirements. However, Lee stressed that only those who are deemed as low risk to participate.

“The whole purpose of the program is to identify those who are low or minimal risk of committing a future crime or engaging in violent acts. These are programs that are designed specifically to help reduce the risk of someone committing a crime when they get out of prison.”

Lee says negotiations in the Senate are ongoing, but when the bill makes it to the floor he is confident it will have overwhelming support.
