Curtis: ‘We started this trade war, and we have to finish it’

Rep. John Curtis says the trade war between the U.S. and China is starting to hit some parts of the economy hard, but President Trump has no choice but to finish it.

“We have started this and we have to finish it. We don’t really have a choice,” said Sunday on Fox News. “We need to be looking at what we can do to minimize the damage. It’s impacting those that can least afford it.”

The trade war between the two economic superpowers was put on hold after Trump met with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit. President Trump agreed to hold off on tariffs until March 1 while the two countries try to come to some agreement.

Curtis, who sits on the House Foreign Relations Committee, said Congress has to play a role in whatever agreement the two countries are able to reach.

“We have to look at other things in our toolbox besides tariffs. America will win this and we’ll see it through. The question is what are the casualties along the way and how long it takes.

When asked whether he thought President Trump has the “spine of steel” needed to reach a deal with China, Curtis responded, “I hope so.”
