Freshman Rep. Ben McAdams said Friday on Fox News that Congress should shift the immigration conversation away from President Donald Trump’s border wall, and instead focus on border security.
“I think we’re caught up in the symbolism of what the wall means,” said McAdams on Your World with Neil Cavuto. “Let’s take a step back from that and talk about the problem we’re trying to solve. If we can focus on that, there’s a lot of common ground.”
Cavuto asked McAdams about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comment that building a wall on the border was “immoral.” McAdams said that sort of rhetoric was not helpful and leads to further polarization.
“I think that draws lines in the sand that get in the way of negotiating and finding common ground,” he said. “As long as we’re couching this conversation in one side wins, the other side loses, we can’t find that. Democrats have to be willing to win. Republicans have to be willing to give. Let’s work toward a comprehensive solution on immigration.”
