Legislative leadership sends citation of support to President Trump following impeachment

Donald Trump 15

On Thursday, House Speaker Brad Wilson and Senate President Stuart Adams made public a citation and letter of support for President Donald Trump following his acquittal in the impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate.

Wilson, R-Kaysville, and Adams, R-Layton, sent the citation to show support for Trump after Republican Sen. Mitt Romney became the first U.S. Senator to vote to convict a president from the same party during an impeachment. Romney ruffled many Republican feathers in Utah when he joined Democrats in the Senate in a vote to remove Trump from office on charges he abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political opponents.

The citation praises Trump for the booming U.S. and Utah economy and lauds his move to reduce the size of the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments. The citation also hails Trump for appointing conservative federal judges and moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The citation does not make mention of Romney.

A formal resolution censuring Romney for his impeachment vote, sponsored by Rep. Phil Lyman, R-Blanding, was made public on Wednesday, but is not expected to get much traction during this year’s session.
