UTA has announced a number of service improvements that will take effect onSunday, August 16. These changes include extended hours on TRAX and the S-Line and increased service on select bus routes.
“UTA has a long tradition of coming in under budget due to our capable staff operating in a lean and efficient manner,” said UTA President and CEO Michael Allegra. “This year, we achieved enough savings that we are able to invest in service beyond what we had already planned for our upcoming change day.”
In addition to service enhancements, UTA is announcing the continuation of the up to 20 percent FAREPAY discount on TRAX and FrontRunner, plus a new 40 percent FAREPAY discount for bus riders. UTA will also offer its popular Group Pass for $10. Group passes allow up to four people to make a round trip on local buses, TRAX and FrontRunner between 8:30 a.m. and midnight on the day of purchase.
Both the FAREPAY promotion and the Group Pass special pricing will begin July 1 and run through December 31, 2015. These fare promotions are designed to thank riders for 45 years of support and encourage them to take advantage of UTA’s new summer holiday schedule, as UTA now offers service on many holidays including Independence Day, Pioneer Day and Labor Day.
“This year, as we celebrate more than four decades of service, we wanted a way to say thank you to our riders,” Allegra said. “We hope our FAREPAY promotion and our new Group Pass pricing make it more convenient for families and groups to ride UTA to events and celebrations taking place this summer.”
Starting August 16, Sunday service will be extended on all TRAX lines. UTA will extend Sunday TRAX service to match Saturday hours, giving riders improvedSunday access to community events and the Salt Lake City International Airport.
The S-Line will also extend both morning and evening service. Starting August 16, the S-Line will offer the same hours of service as TRAX, seven days per week.
Starting August 16, bus routes 220 and 54 will offer 15-minute service. Route 2X will offer additional morning trips to the University of Utah. Routes 603, 612 and 470 will debut increased Saturday service, with the 603 and 612 running every 15 minutes and the 470 running every 30 minutes.
Bus route 220 runs from Salt Lake Central Station to Sandy along Highland Drive. Route 54 runs along 5400 South from Murray Central Station to 5600 West. Route 2X offers express service from Salt Lake Central Station to the University of Utah Medical Center. Route 603 runs from the Ogden Transit Center to Weber State University and McKay-Dee Hospital. Route 612 runs along Washington Boulevard in Ogden, and route 470 runs from the Ogden Transit Center to downtown Salt Lake City.
UTA began increasing bus service as early as last month, with the addition of 15-minute service on Route 850 in Utah County. The new schedule is proving to be successful with Utah County riders, with as many as 2,150 boardings per weekday on the Lehi-to-Provo route.
The FAREPAY promotion will be extended until December 31, with a 40-percent discount on local bus fare. Starting July 1, one-way bus fare will be $1.50 when riders use their FAREPAY cards. The FAREPAY bus discount does not apply to paratransit, PC – SLC Connect or ski bus service. The FAREPAY rail discount will remain approximately 20 percent off regular fare: $2 one-way fare on TRAX and the S-Line, and a $2 base fare on FrontRunner, with a 50-cent charge for each station traveled. FAREPAY cards can be purchased online or at UTA customer service centers and retailers across the Wasatch Front. Reduced-fare FAREPAY cards are available to qualifying riders at UTA customer service centers.
Starting July 1, UTA’s Group Pass will allow four people to make a round trip on FrontRunner, TRAX and local buses for $10, reduced from the current $15 purchase price. Group Passes can be used after 8:30 a.m. and expire at midnight on the day of purchase. The discounted group pass will be available until December 31. Group Passes can be purchased at FrontRunner ticket vending machines, online and at UTA customer service centers.
