Salt Lake City Transportation Director Nominated as Director of Public Works for Minneapolis

Robin Hutcheson, Salt Lake City’s Transportation Division Director, announced she would be leaving her position to become the Director of Public Works for Minneapolis.

Robin was recently nominated by Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges to fill the role, and will be considered by the City’s Executive Committee on Wednesday.

Robin Hutcheson was appointed Transportation Division Director in 2012 by Mayor Ralph Becker, and was reappointed by Mayor Jackie Biskupski earlier this year. During Robin’s tenure, Salt Lake City constructed the S-Line, expanded pedestrian safety infrastructure, helped guide the nearly complete Transit Master Plan, and during this year’s budget process, secured an initial funding request for a traffic light synchronization project.

“Without question this is a loss for Salt Lake City, a gain for Minneapolis, but most importantly, an enormous step forward for Robin,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski on the announcement. “Over the last six months, Robin has been a key member of my administration; her passion for her work, and dedication to her team and this city make it clear why she was initially selected to lead the Transportation Division under Mayor Becker, why I reappointed her, and no doubt why Minneapolis worked hard to lure her to their city.”

Throughout her career, Robin Hutcheson has earned a reputation as an innovator. Prior to joining Salt Lake City she was a well-regarded transportation consultant, working in both the United States and throughout Europe. In 2016, the Women in Transportation Seminar Northern Utah Chapter named the Salt Lake City Transportation Division “Employer of the Year.”

“When you shine a bright light on a strong female leader, people take notice,” Mayor Biskupski continued. “While one of the few women in leadership roles in her field, Robin has excelled, opening doors for many behind her, this should never be overlooked.”

As the Director of Public Works for Minneapolis, Robin will oversee transportation, water, lighting, sewage, garbage and recycling services. The Department of Public Works has over 1,000 employees, with a budget of approximately $335 million–the city’s largest employer and budget.

“We know how lucky we are to have been able to lure Robin Hutcheson to be our Director of Public Works,” said Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges. “She has been a dynamic leader in Salt Lake City and we look forward to what she will bring to our Department of Public Works.”

“While I am excited to be taking on this new role, I leave Salt Lake City with a heavy heart, grateful to Mayor Biskupski and my team for understanding the importance of my following this new opportunity,” said Robin Hutcheson on her new position. “I am so proud of the work the transportation team has accomplished, and I am confident Salt Lake City will remain on the forefront of thinking about urban streets as areas of opportunity, while addressing issues of accessibility and equity.”

Robin Hutcheson’s last day with Salt Lake City will be July 8th. A search for a new Transportation Director will begin as soon as feasible.
