Historic number of Republican women serving in the Utah legislature

The Republican Women Lead PAC (RWL) congratulates Heidi Balderree on her victory in the Senate District 22 special election! Once Senator-Elect Balderree is appointed by Governor Cox, the number of Republican women serving in the Utah legislature will be at an all-time high of 14. This is historic for Utah as more Republican women step forward to lead in their communities. For the first time in the state’s history, there are now more Republican women serving than Democrat women in both the House and Senate.

When asked about Senator-Elect Balderree’s victory, Senate Majority Whip Senator Ann Millner shared, “I am so excited to be able to have another Republican woman serving in the Senate. I look forward to working with Heidi!” House Majority Assistant Whip Representative Lisonbee said, “It is exciting to see more and more conservative Republican women run for office in Utah. And it is rewarding to see one of our endorsed candidates successfully win a highly contested seat. Heidi ran a great campaign and will be a fantastic legislator.”

When the Republican Women Lead PAC was launched in 2021, just nine Republican women served in the legislature; since then, five additional Republican women have successfully run for the legislature. In addition, RWL has contributed to and mentored over fifty Republican women running for mayor, city council, county, and state elected positions.

Utah GOP Chairman Robert Axson commented, “I am grateful for the amazing Republican women across Utah who support our party platform and defend our principles. I stand with the bold conservative women who continue to help Utah lead out as the best state to call home.”

The mission of the Republican Women Lead (RWL) Political Action Committee is to recruit, train, and provide financial resources to Republican women candidates. Speaking on the purpose of the PAC, Republican Women Lead Board Chair Representative Pierucci said, “The goal of Republican Women Lead is to empower Republican women with the resources, training, fundraising, and confidence they need to succeed in running for office. If we want to increase the number of Republican women serving in statewide elected office and Congress, we need to build out a strong bench of Republican women and that is exactly what we’re doing.”
